Editorial Amazon.co.uk Review
San Francisco has been the setting of a lot of exciting movie car chases over the years, but this 1968 police thriller is still the one to beat when it comes to high-octane action on the steep hills of the city by the Bay. The outstanding car chase earned an Oscar for best editing, but the rest of the movie is pretty good, too. Bullitt is a perfect star vehicle for cool guy Steve McQueen, who stars as a tenacious detective (is there any other kind?) determined to track down the killers of the star witness in an important trial. Director Peter Yates (Breaking Away) approached the story with an emphasis on absolute authenticity, using a variety of San Francisco locations. Jacqueline Bisset and Robert Duvall appear in early roles, and Robert Vaughn plays the criminal kingpin who pulls the deadly strings of the tightly wound plot. --Jeff Shannon

The Classic of all classics Review date: 2010-08-26 Rating: 10 out of 10
McQueen is Bullitt, the no-nonsense ultra-cool detective, laconic icon of cool.He makes you realize how the big stars acted with their eyes, their body language, creating a myth and acting within their own image. This film took McQueen into superstar status.Behind him come the Redfords and Newmans, the Eastwoods. To set him up against Robert Vaughn as Chalmers, the politician,a man of many words and much sleaze,is to create the insubordinate cop pitted against those in power, the forerunner of Coogan's Bluff,Dirty Harry,The French Connection. This film was the progenitor of all the car chases you have ever seen, but it betters those later ones, because it is shorn of tricks and CGI,with The Man doing many of his own stunts, dipping and swerving, bumping and rising in the sunny streets of San Francisco Bay.His eyes as blue as the bluest of blue skies, with a jazzy soundtrack playing in the background.
Think of McQueen and you think of The Magnificent Seven,The Cincinnati Kid,The Great Escape,The Getaway,The Thomas Crown Affair,The Sandpebbles...seeingthis film decades after I first saw it makes me realize how unforgettable it is.And the Mustang.Who cares about the plot?
Reviews2 discs interesting extrasReview date: 2010-08-14 Rating: 8 out of 10I purchased this DVD for a present for someone who had never seen it.I opted for the 2 disc edition over just the film which was worth the extra money to see some enlightening footage and background documentary/interviews that reflect on Steve McQueen himself and the making of the film. Recollections from the stuntmen were the highlights for me.
The film itself is really all about the chase & the style- the story is a little confused and in McQueen style he does little dialogue and lots of hard cool stares.
The King of CoolReview date: 2010-06-20 Rating: 10 out of 10Steve McQueen should not need any introduction to any film fan but if one is necessary then this film is a fine example of what the King Of Cool was all about. Never has there been a cooler cop, calculating yet human, undaunted by setbacks and totally in charge of the situation despite his superior's disapproval. A likeable maverick much copied since by the likes of Eastwood's Dirty Harry but Peter Yate's Frank Bullitt is way cooler in the sixties style of the film's mise en scene. If you like car chases look no further either. This is the grandaddy of them all with two of Americas finest muscle cars in the starring roles. McQueen is exemplary as Lt Bullitt but there are also great performances from Robert Vaughn, Jacqueline Bisset and Don Gordon. There is a nice little cameo part for the great Robert Duvall as a taxi driver who helps Bullitt retrace the events leading to the crime. The west coast sixties vibe in the USA is captured well here and the indomitable Lalo Schifrin provides yet another exquisite score, with tunes that set right right there in your head until you find yourself humming them and wishing you had a 1968 Ford Mustang 390 GT fastback sitting outside your San Francisco apartment.MCQUEEN LIVES ON FOREVER ........Review date: 2010-06-16 Rating: 10 out of 10This film is for me what Mcqueen was all about...In this film you see the man from the inside ..A real man's man and a truly great , real actor..Acting to Steve Mcqueen was'nt really acting it was just him being himself in front of the cameras.. I dont need to go on about the film and what it was all about, thats been done to death already!! .....the reason I am writing this review is to get you to watch the film for yourself and if you are not already a Mcqueen fan then after this ,you will be ..
This performance along with his performance in PAPILLON makes you wonder how this amazing actor never ,ever won an Oscar....
Hollywood shame on you...!!
And to quote the legend himself ..." And thats my final word on the matter....
God bless you ....Mr Mcqueen... :-)Still coolReview date: 2009-10-14 Rating: 10 out of 1040 odd years later and still one of the coolest movies ever made. I suppose what makes it so damn cool (besides the presence of Steve McQueen) is the minimal dialogue but each word is meaningful to the plot and character development. So much is also conveyed in looks and expression. A marvelously constructed and tense movie with real characters. And of course THE car chase that started them all. And no CGI or special effects in sight. Just real cars with real drivers on real roads and no ludicrous near misses such as with have these days where you need to suspend all disbelief. People actually die rather than walk away from massive explosions etc only requiring a band aid and a glib one liner. Well acted and tightly directed this movie has held up really well over time. Buy it you will not be disappointed.
