Editorial Amazon.co.uk Review
Considering the TV series Police Squad managed a mere six episodes, it's no small testament to its qualities that it proved the inspiration for a trio of cinematic hits. And this bringing together of all three Naked Gun films delivers, as the original series did, a belly-load of laughs. Each is a spoof, very much in the spirit of the original Airplane (unsurprising, as the same people are involved), with the focus this time being on Leslie Nielsen's Lt Frank Drebin, a well-meaning yet chaotic detective who, along with George Kennedy's Capt Ed Hocken, O.J.Simpson's Nordberg and Priscilla Presley's Jane finds himself with crimes to solve, and nothing but sheer ineptitude to help him. The plot in each movie clearly takes a back seat, as each film is an exercise in throwing as many gags at the wall and hoping they stick. The hit rate in the first of the three is high enough to genuinely warrant it being a modern day comedy classic, with clever sight gags and more elaborate sequences keeping the chuckle count high and constant. Neither sequel gets close to it, but both do have their moments too. Crucially, as none of the films outstays its welcome, thanks to their relatively brief running times, each emerges as an enjoyable, joyfully silly and frequently funny comedy, set to be enjoyed time and time again.--Simon Brew
Anyone for a threesome? Review date: 2010-09-06 Rating: 10 out of 10
It's widely regarded that #1 is the best with diminishing returns on #2 and #3 but I found that #2 was just as good as #1 and sure, #3 might not be quite up there but I'm sure Leslie Nielsen enjoyed his obligatory tongue sandwich with Priscilla Presley, cavorting with Anna Nicole Smith and his catfight with Raquel Welch, who wouldn't?
Nevermind 'The Godfather' or 'The Lord Of The Rings', this is the trilogy that every home should own, well, unlss you count the 'Police Squad' series, then I suppose that's 4 and what's that, a quadrology? a quadrilateral? a quadripartite? a quadruple? By jove that's it, I knew I'd get in the end.
ReviewsfunnyReview date: 2010-07-04 Rating: 8 out of 10First off, if you're going to get this either before or after you have read what I have to say, make sure you also pick up the TV series which formed the base for these movies and is roughly the same price. That way you can not only compare but see where Frank Drebin started out. So the films - they're brilliant and so funny it's hard to stop your sides splitting. Each film has a decent plot (the second would be funny for this day and age) The Final Insult is my personal favourite of the three; especially the dream sequence at the beginning which mocks The Untouchables and Frank picks up that penny - classic comedy! The one-liners are still here as with previous Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker and the opening sequences are particularly funny.
It has to be said that some of the gags/jokes are taken from the TV series or from their previous movie Airplane! which is why I would not rate this above the TV series or Airplane! and because when you hear the beginning of the joke or one-liner you know them if you have seen their other work. That said the new material and the plots to all three films are still hilarious and are some of the most successful comedy sequels of all time. Perfectly funny to watch with friends on a night-in, these three classic comedy films in one boxset are worth their price tag - buy them.
Police squadReview date: 2010-05-27 Rating: 8 out of 10All three films with Leslie Nielsen's Lt Frank Drebin and the beautiful Prescilla Presley. The first film is the best, without a doubt. What happened?Review date: 2010-01-15 Rating: 4 out of 10Seriously, what happened? The Naked Gun (or 'Naked Gun 1', for idiots) is a largely amusing film full to the imaginary brim (it's not an actual hat, you see) with sight gags, cheap puns and thankfully a very few references to other movies, which is, if we're honest, the go-to option for air-thieves when it comes to this type of movie (that means you, Marlon, Damon, Sean William, Dieter, Lazbow, Chuck, Claret, Ham, Ken, Void, Spencer and Trilby Wayans, the LOT of ya.)
'Hilarious' prose aside, I really do like The Naked Gun a lot, with the floating chalk-line among my favourite gags in the movie. OJ "I'm not saying I DID do it, but isn't it fun to idiotically hypothesize in the printed, mass marketed medium" Simpson's anguished cry of "oh no" when he tenderly stumbles into some wet paint is the funniest thing in the whole trilogy. After that though, I have no way of understanding the severe decline in quality, particularly considering the same talent was involved for all three movies.
The second one is somewhat passable, thanks to an extended repeat of that chalkline gag and Drebin's final request to his would-be murderer being "Can I have the gun?". Ha ha. Chortle, tee hee, oh look it's over. TWO GOOD GAGS IN EIGHTY MINUTES! The third movie is so bad that I watched it on the 1.5 speed setting on my PS3 and it still took about three days (not really, that's exaggeration).
Too much mugging from Nielsen, not enough Nordberg catastrophe and a drought of sight gags let the sequels down. Goes to show that even if ZAZ had been involved with Airplane 2, it still would have been rubbish.
Right, I'm off to watch White Chicks 5: Still Whiteys.top filmReview date: 2009-12-31 Rating: 10 out of 10if you love leslie nielson, then this is for you, all the laughs and more, top quality, fast delivery, 5************
