5 stars I love it Review date: 2010-07-01 Rating: 10 out of 10
ok, i like family guy- it's a classic show but i'm taking a long break from it. why? because i've been watching it for years and it's kinda lost its impact like the simpsons has.
American Dad has a much more sophisticated political satire sense of humour (but also plenty of gags) it has story and plot development and fuller characters. yeah, ok so it has a gay alien and a talking german fish but strangely it's a lot more realistic. there's only so many times you can laugh at hitler on a unicycle.
stan represents conservative america & hayley represents the more progressive liberals. steve is young and idolises his dad and tries to please him but whether he is actually has the same views is up for debate. there's all sorts of interesting contradictions in the smith family. i think seth macfarlane once said that hayley represents the views of the writers and stan is a relic of sorts from the cold war. i'm a liberal but i think stan is a very loveable character.
i actually bought season one after buying all the others, it took me a while to find a copy (though i had seen season 1 before) i suggest you buy season 1 first, then if you like it, you should go and buy all the others. i can't get enough of this show and i can't wait for season 5! usually animated shows get stale after a while but after 5 years american dad is as fresh and funny and sharp and relevant as it ever was
ReviewsPretty good light entertainmentReview date: 2010-06-26 Rating: 6 out of 10This is a funny cartoon series. I was visiting someone and the TV was playing in the corner and it happened to be on MTV and they happened to show "The American Dad" and I found it surprisingly good. I mean, stuff like "Beavis and Butthead", "South Park" and "The Simpsons" are way too silly to watch, but this had a somewhat different touch which I can't quite put my finger on but which got me interested. So I bought this DVD set one day at the supermarket when I was in a generous mood.
Now, I've been watching the series occasionally. I like the kind of crass, low-intelligence humour like in "Borat" or the comic strip "Ernie". This cartoon is not nearly as good, but to a part, it's very amusing. Some of it is disturbingly PC, though.
To sum up: this is watchable, but if it didn't exist, I wouldn't be any unhappier. If you like Family Guy then this is for youReview date: 2009-10-12 Rating: 10 out of 10It's by the creators of Family Guy and mines a similar comedy seam, just with a different bunch of characters which allows the writers to go off on different tangents. Including a rather camp alien and a talking goldfish among your cast list opens out quite a few new options. Basically, if you are a Family Guy fan then you will enjoy American Dad. I think it's very funny indeed.GreatReview date: 2009-07-14 Rating: 8 out of 10I'm a big fan of american dad, I watch it almost every day and it never fails to amuse me. I enjoy it much more than Family guy, which has really lost it's appeal.
It follows the adventures of stan smith (CIA agent), his family, and the alien and talking goldfish that live with them.
This DVD contains the episodes:
Pilot
threat levels
stan knows best
francine's flashback
roger coger
homeland insecurity
deacon stan, jeasus man
all about steve
bullocks to stan
a smith in the hand
con heir
stan of arabia parts 1 & 2
As other reviews have said, this isn't the whole of season one, which is rather unfair to the buyers, but makes them a whole lot more money. It doesn't stop me buying the dvds.
Season one is probably not the best of the seasons, this is because they are trying too hard to be funny in some places, but it doesn't work. They are also trying to be too much like Family Guy, when really, the later seasons are better because they have moved on from the humour of Family Guy.
Worth watching if you're a fan of similar shows. As funny as Family Guy , maybe even betterReview date: 2009-02-05 Rating: 10 out of 10After watching this box set of American Dad , I can't decide which is actually better/ funnier out of this or Family Guy.
American Dad shares the absurd and obscene humour of Family Guy , but at the same time it's much different from it.
Sure we have the typical family cast format , but unlike Family Guy American dad is more focused with the story of the episode.
Sure Family Guy is random fun with it's many sketches, but American Dad shows it can be just as funny and still focus on the main story without going off on huge tangents.
Also since the father of the series works for the CIA , it justifies for interesting scenarios.
This series also displays current era topics in a refreshingly light hearted and funny fashion too, with sprinklings of light character development.
Even though it does tackle real world issues you never really get the feeling of lessons being forced down you're throat ( although the characters do learn from their mistakes and change) , since it's so stupidly funny.
If you love Family Guy , definitely give American Dad a try !
I'd say it's very much an evolution of Family Guy !
