Editorial Amazon.co.uk Review
There's something about this film that's so irresistible, despite its grandiose manipulation. Maybe because it recounts the greatest air battle in history, achieving the greatest aerial battle in film history. Maybe because it has such a terrific cast (Harry Andrews, Michael Caine, Trevor Howard, Curt Jurgens, Laurence Olivier, Nigel Patrick, Christopher Plummer, Michael Redgrave, Ralph Richardson, Robert Shaw, Patrick Wymark, and Edward Fox). Maybe because it's so technically well-made, thanks to the Bond team of producer Harry Saltzman and director Guy Hamilton and the great cinematographer Freddie Young. Or maybe because there is something truly riveting about watching the British kick the Nazis back to Germany. --Bill Desowitz
Battle of Britain - The definitive edition Review date: 2010-08-13 Rating: 10 out of 10
This is absolutely brilliant
Exciting, engaging, yet showing some of the realities of war
Makes you realise the bravey from all involved
There were many of the classic cliches of Films like this - Spitfires, grass landing strips, flying jackets and a labrador.
What a joy!
Reviewsincorrect information for the music score.Review date: 2010-08-06 Rating: 6 out of 10The synopsis gives the impression that the whole music score is by the late Sir William Walton, this is incorrect as there is only a fragment of his score in this edition. The synopsis may be correct for the DVD version, but sadly, not so for the BlueRay version.WORTH 5 STARS AND A MUST HAVE FILMReview date: 2010-08-02 Rating: 10 out of 10I have to give it 5 stars - on account of the arial combat action, and seeing the likes of Olivier, Caine et al in a film about Britain's greatest military triumph. The ending is just perfect - clear skies over London on a sunny day. The acting if the pilots was probably just right - British stiff upper lip never say die and bitter irony of humour in the face of probable death. The Germans are portrayed sympathetically, you even feel sorry for them at the end as the top brass of the Luftwaffe sit in silence over dinner after another panning by the RAF. Credit is given to the non-UK aircrew - all good. I did wonder if people were really so together emotionally in the actual war - Ian McShane shows little emotion when he returns to an obliterated church hall where his wife and 2 sons have just (presumably) been killed. But then maybe that's how it was - the horror is too great to accept. In that sense it reminded me of another British film - "A Night To Remember" in which the acting is, perhaps correctly, restrained.A great filmReview date: 2010-07-25 Rating: 10 out of 10I saw this film when it first came out and I thought then it was a great film. It seems more so now for some reason. What made it more enjoyable for me was the accompanying special features. I find it interesting to have the director talk about how he approached the film and the technical aspects of re-creating this major historical event. The aerial photography is stunning. A distinguished cast. I personally would have liked to see a deeper storyline for Air Marshal Lord Dowding and Air Vice-Marshal Sir Keith Park, knowing now how pivotal their roles were. But rightly the film was paying tribute to the pilots. What can you say!Review date: 2010-07-09 Rating: 10 out of 10This is a must for any aviation WW2 buff. Special to me because with my friends we visited Duxford when the a/c were based there and had a private (unofficial) tour of the flight line and so have walked along lines of HE111s, ME109s, Spitfires, Hurricane (only 1 or 2 those I think. Also there was the Mitchell that was converted for the flight sequences, galss fibre bomb craters, the NAAFI truck etc.
We should be very grateful it was made when it was - computer graphics can never fully replace the original and never look as good the second time.
