Great series, dodgy packaging Review date: 2010-09-09 Rating: 8 out of 10
Not going to comment on the show itself, since if you're buying a complete set you're probably pretty sure you like it anyway, so I'll just review the package itself.
Inside the box are 18 individual DVD boxes, with 2 discs in each. When lined up, the spines make the "X" logo, and it all looks fine. Definitely better than the ugly single season sets, anyway.
The box itself is the problem. You CANNOT stand it vertically on a shelf, as the lid only stays shut under it's own weight, there's no catch or anything. There's a little circle of something underneath the X logo on the front, which looks like it's meant to stick to the X and hold it shut, but it isn't sticky at all, it's just a circle of clear plastic, so it doesn't really do anything. Only reason for it being there I can figure is too stop the pieces of cardboard from actually touching, although I'm not sure why this would be an issue.
It's also worth noting there are no special features, and no little booklets or anything of that sort which are often included with complete box sets.
Still, for the money, this is the one to go for. Less-than-perfect packaging isn't a fatal flaw, it's just a minor inconvenience.
ReviewsXenarifficReview date: 2010-06-21 Rating: 10 out of 10What can I say that u do not already know!
Xena was and still is great!
There is not much like it out there and it is something u can watch over and over and still laugh or think "Yeah kick his butt!"
Considering how many hours are on this baybee I think its brill!
As some slogan says 'JUST DO IT'
=0PLOVED IT , WONT MORE !!!!!!!!!Review date: 2010-06-10 Rating: 10 out of 10Just watched all these loved em wishing for more seasons, without being a spoiler id like to say shes got out of trickier jams and id like to see another 4 seasons please (if not more^^). As to the box set i got one slightly damaged corner but not worried there, dvds were all fine and for a change all the cases were fine too as ive had damaged cases and disc holders in other box sets. the box sets cool box is card but love the way it opens up and the click as you close it.
As someone else pointed out could have done with the Hercules episodes / films as there was some discontinuity in the calisto story line and as this is supposed to be the ultimate collection you would expect to have everything Xena was in inside. This isnt huge prob but is annoying speacially as i now have Xena and Gaby mania, heck id buy the hercules box set but there doesnt seem to be one i also cant seem to see a complete selection of the various seasons of hercules either , hopeing in time there will be and can complete my ultimate Xena box set by adding the begining and middle bits that are in hercules.
Still that being said its awesome entertainment and excellent value. Epsodes can go from action packed seriousness with real emotion drawn, torn and ripped from those watching.
To comedy style episodes which are also brilliantly entertaining to watch.
Then theres the musical episodes which took me a little off guard at first but are Great, better than most of the rubbish "singers" ive heard lately on radio and tv.
Now just left hopeing for some more, still in the meantime i will rewatch this awesome series at a slightly slower pace, as first time round i just inhaled it all pretty much none stop with the occasional trip to the kitchen and toilet.
I encourage anyone and everyone to watch this you cant help but love it.One of the best tv shows ever.Review date: 2010-05-06 Rating: 10 out of 10Xena is simply a highly entertaining tv show. It might be low budget and have some silly storylines from time to time but at the end of the day it never took itself too seriously and was all the better for it. The relationship between Xena and Gabrielle is marvellous to watch and secured the tv show a massive lesbian following. Personally, i started watching the show when i was 10, the year the show started. I love the fact that Xena is a strong woman although i guess she's hardly someone to look upto owing to her 'dark past'.
For those who don't know, the basic story of the show is this: Xena is an ex-warlord and holder of other evil titles. She refuses to kill a child and loses the respect of her army. She's put through the gauntlet but maanges to survive it, leaving her bad ways behind forever. Whilst wondering through Greece (actually New Zealand) she comes across villagers being attacked and saves them. One villager who comes to Xena's attention is Gabrielle, a young woman who is desperate to leave her boring life and go on adventures. After some nagging Xena agrees to let Gabrielle travel with her.
The series features the Greek Gods and various episodes in history. Amazingly Xena was present a Troy, is a friend of Cleopatra and was in Britain visiting her friend Boudicaa. The show unshamedly messes with the timeline of history, all in the name of entertainment. The worse example is probably when Xena visits the Norse lands and even meets the Viking gods! All in all i think Xena would have to have lived for well over 1000 years to witness all the events but still, its just a tv show.
I have many favourite episodes, too many to mention really but i would definitely recommend 'adventures in the sin trade'. Also, watch out for the comic episodes where Lucy Lawless and Rennee O' Connor really show that they are fantastic comic actresses.
amazingReview date: 2010-03-29 Rating: 8 out of 10i watched the shows as a kid so few years later and i saw this thought you cant beat a classic just arrived today and the box alone i was like wow cant wait to get stuck in i had read other review about no bonus material only on region 1 version but that dont relly bother me this is an amazing collection box
