Editorial Amazon.co.uk Review
Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it. Remember Arrested Development? Smartest, funniest show on television. A critics' darling. An Emmy-winner for Best Comedy Series. But no one watched, and it was cancelled. Will history repeat itself with 30 Rock? It's the smartest, funniest show on television. A critics' darling. An Emmy-winner for Best Comedy Series. And it finished its inaugural season in 137th place! Hopefully, people will discover all that they missed with this Season 1 set and 30 Rock will, better late than never, find the audience it so richly deserves. A behind-the-scenes workplace comedy in the grand tradition of The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Dick Van Dyke Show, 30 Rock stars comedy geek goddess Tina Fey as Liz Lemmon, who juggles her hapless personal life with her chaotic career as the producer and head writer of an SNL-ish sketch comedy show. She has a new boss, cunning and ruthless GE executive Jack Donaghy (Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award-winner Alec Baldwin), who insists on being her mentor, and a new star, medicated, loose-cannon comedian Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan), who steals the spotlight from the show's flighty star, Jenna Maroney (Jane Krakowski). Briskly paced and perfectly cast, 30 Rock rewards viewers with brilliant dialogue (when Liz asks Jack why he is dressed in a tuxedo with no formal event to attend, he coolly responds, "It's after six; what am I, a farmer?") and fresh characters you haven't seen on a hundred other sitcoms. Jack McBrayer is the series' scene-stealing breakout star as NBC page Kenneth, a sweet and innocent "rube." The ensemble's seemingly spontaneous byplay invites repeat viewings to catch jokes and sly bits of business you might have missed (in "Tracy Does Conan," listen for the initial confusion over how to pronounce Tracy's less-than-ethical physician, Dr. Spaceman, or, in "The Hair and the Head," watch for the Katie Couric slur on the wall of what is purported to be NBC anchor Brian Williams' trashed office). In a season full of gems (including "Black Tie," featuring Paul Reubens as severely inbred royalty), there are only a couple of comparative clunkers, but the pleasure of this ensemble's company more than compensates. 30 Rock is highly recommended for people like Kenneth who just love television so much. And by the hammer of Thor, watch season 2! --Donald Liebenson
Prefer 2nd season Review date: 2010-08-07 Rating: 8 out of 10
The original series is great but takes a few episodes to get into the routine of the other series. Good also to know what TGS stands for/originates from from the other series
ReviewsTop DVD from top seller!Review date: 2010-07-19 Rating: 10 out of 10Really pleased at the speedy service recieved!! DVD arrived just in time for a marathon 30 Rock night with some good friends and good wine!! Great Condition. Thanks a lot, Mea.Very good on first view, even better on second!Review date: 2010-07-16 Rating: 10 out of 10This is one of those rare American comedies which seems to miss most people due to odd time slots and little promotion, and thus disappear off the UK radar. But please, I beg one and all, give this a go. The characters are superbly written and portrayed by people who obviously enjoy playing the roles, they all have backgrounds and depth, there is NO laughter track (hooray!!) and there are so many sharp quips, jokes and references that it's very easy to only notice them on the second or third viewing of an episode. The main one that jumped out at me was the use of the same actress to play a whole raft of characters! One episode she's an incomprehensible English tv presenter, then a hideous hooker with Jack, then a protest organiser, then an employee selling kittens, then a staff counsellor, then a doctor and so on. How I missed that the first time round I have no idea.
Nobody is politically correct in this, we're never given any corny moralising, and above all, I find this plain old funny!
I bought this a few months ago and was very pleased with it, and then dug it out for another viewing and it had improved immeasurably simply because more of the fast lines struck me! That doesn't happen very often. I've now got series 2 which is also very, very good.
When any tv company gets comedy right, whether American or British, it can be superb. And this is.Not quite there in Season 1Review date: 2010-06-25 Rating: 8 out of 10I had great hopes for the show and here and there it shows real potential. There is a wealth of characters ready and willing to have whole plot lines or episodes built around them but it never happens. The whole show is built more around Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin, and while very funny in parts, most of the time the interaction between the two isn't funny at all. It's an awkward first season like I said. However I gave it 4 stars as these sorts of shows often do take at least one season to settle down (2 1/2 men, Friends etc.)
The killer highlight from the first show was when 'Lemmon' (Tina Fey)comes out with an all time classic (or certainly relates to my wife) she states she's so stressed all she wants to do is run home, eat a block of cheddar cheese and watch TV shows about 'Little People'. Apart from that most of the show doesn't have any out and out killer jokes. Just comments that make you smile.
If you have read this review please rate it and keep the amazon rating system working.I am straight up mentally ill!Review date: 2010-06-17 Rating: 10 out of 10Liz Lemon, very funny
Jack Donaghy, very funny
Tracey Jordon, very funny
Kenneth Whatshisface, also evry funny
The only thing I had a problem with was the third disc only had about 5 episodes on it, why not divide them equally? The other two discs had 8 or 9 so I was expecting another disc with that many, but that didn't really matter.
